Review

Every Day Is Nature Appreciation Day With This Strain

One puff and I'm falling in love with desert landscapes all over again.

A good weed strain is versatile. A controversial statement, I know, but ideally weed can help you relax when you need to or feel stimulated when you need to get things done. A good strain soothes both the mind and the body. It works as well in crowded situations as it does when you’re alone. It fits your mood and helps you appreciate whatever circumstances you’re in. As you can probably imagine, a good strain is hard to find.

Just two shallow puffs of this baby sent me into a spiral of heavenly bliss.

I recently moved from a sprawling Arizona cityscape to a small desert town near Joshua Tree, California. Sometimes I wonder why I made this choice but, as weird as it sounds, Lowell Farms’ Purple Peyote Diesel (PPD) helped remind me. From my experience, PPD is as incredibly diverse as it is incredibly powerful. Lowell Farms’ flower in particular gave off a grapefruit lemonade scent that was tingly to the nose. This indicated to me that it promised something with a sativa kick, while the ‘peyote’ part of the name hinted at some strong, psychedelic vibes. The name and smell didn’t disappoint—just two shallow puffs of this baby sent me into a spiral of heavenly bliss.

This strain was good for everything from zoning out in front of the TV to easing back pain while moving heavy furniture. It even came in handy when I decided to explore a bit of nature and reflect on my place in the world—after I pushed through the couch-lock, that is. After two small hits from a mini-bong, I was glued to the couch while I ate breakfast and watched some Saturday morning cartoons. I was almost too stoned but didn’t fully stumble over that threshold. Considering this strain from Lowell Farms’ lineup packs nearly 30% THC, I can’t say I’m all that surprised the high was initially heavy. While I had some trouble making decisions at first (so much anime to watch), I felt rewired and energized in no time at all. This was great because I hadn’t slept well the night before and really needed that energy boost.

In about 30 minutes, I was feeling perfectly refreshed. The high had warmed me up enough to feel extremely motivated, encouraging me to assemble the IKEA furniture that’d been clogging up my to-do list. Following IKEA instructions is never easy, so I was surprised to find the weed didn’t impede me in any way. That PPD kept me focused and less irritated by loose screws and those weird wooden pegs I always end up losing. Hauling heavy crap like a bed frame around can also put my back out, but on this diesel fuel, it didn’t bother me at all. Putting on some music made chores a breeze and when it was all done, I felt the greatest rush of accomplishment and bliss.

The comedown was smooth enough that I could see myself using this flower for special occasions.

During another session, I felt inspired to walk my pit bulls around my neighborhood near Joshua Tree. Again, I didn’t need many puffs to get blasted and I’m no lightweight when it comes to pot. After a few bong hits, I was feeling just as uplifted as I was the first time. On my walk around the neighborhood, I observed crazy white desert iguanas flicking through the sand and saw bees pollinating a palo verde tree. I heard music that wasn’t there (it was a neighbor’s malfunctioning AC unit) and was so high that I told the tree, “I love you,” and I meant it. Just like that, the PPD had me falling in love with the desert all over again. After my nature walk, I made myself a delicious sandwich (kind of going overboard with the condiments), and this strain stimulated my appetite a lot. The comedown was smooth enough that I could see myself using this flower for special occasions. A lot of special occasions. This weed was—and I don’t use this word lightly—transcendental.

I’m surprised this strain was so good at centering me and helping me appreciate the weird desert landscape I call my home. It made me feel grateful that I could even be in such an unusually beautiful place with my dogs and nature and legally smoke weed. “This is what life is about,” the weed spirit seemed to speak to me. Ethnobotanist Kathleen Harrison often talks about ancient spiritual beliefs surrounding cannabis, including that it has a presence that can “speak” to you. I don’t know how much credence I give to these convictions, but often when I smoke, I feel a kind of clarity and an inner voice that soothes me. Lowell Farms’ Purple Peyote Diesel sure didn’t disappoint on that front.

When people ask me why I smoke weed, it’s not just the pleasure or recreational aspect, nor is it just the medicinal benefits. It’s so much more about absorbing the joy and wonder around me and reflecting it back into the world. A versatile strain like PPD helps me do just that.
