Proper Buyer's Guide: PAX Era Pods

A breakdown of Proper Pax Era-powered highs for the discerning vape consumer.

If you’ve been to any event or party even tangentially related to the cannabis industry in the past year, then you’ve likely seen scores of people puffing on a sleek vaporizer that sort of looks like the alien-crafted monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Make no mistake, this posh paraphernalia isn’t your average pen; it’s the PAX Era. And the device’s growing popularity should come as no surprise once you learn a thing or two about it.

To give you a little background, PAX has been a forerunner in the portable vaporizer game since the company first launched in 2007. The Stanford grads who started the California-based brand wanted to merge design and experience for each of the PAX devices. The Era empowers discreet, on-the-go extract dosing and stands out as one of the most stylish and high-functioning vaporizers currently on the market. Described by PAX as “a radical new approach to experience concentrates,” the Era is a unique experience in and of itself.

Editor's Note: I know because I’ve sampled it extensively.

Of course, it has to have more than just nice aesthetics to be worthwhile. Beyond being feather-light and button-free (users simply inhale), it’s pocket-friendly, which means the Era won’t turn on inside your pants. It even boasts a four-hour battery life, so the device is not going to die after only a few pulls. And like its flower-vaporizing predecessors, the Era is compatible with the PAX mobile app, which enables precise temperature control so you can actually experience and discern between the unique flavor profiles of different pods. I also appreciate that the Era is a relatively inexpensive vaping option for consumers just getting into cannabis.

Here’s the thing, though. In lieu of traditional vape cartridges that fit most 510-thread batteries, PAX requires you to buy extract-filled pods that are unique to the device and are easily popped in and out. I’ve found they’ve sidestepped any variety issues in the Era by partnering with different premium brands to provide a wide range of high-quality pods.

If you’re wondering how to navigate all the different pods to figure out which one is the right fit for you, have no fear. Below, you’ll find an Era pod breakdown, organized according to the feelings and vibes you can expect to get in just a few pulls.

Wake Up & Go

Rare is it that I'll feel energized from a cannabis product—getting wired off of weed is just not a sensation I experience very often. There are some products, though, that will have me feeling as if I'm going through my day on a higher plane. These contain oils, sauces, and live resin sourced from upbeat sativa strains that will have you on cruise control. Any supercharged feelings are simply par for the course.

Island: Lemon Wreck (CA)

The Lab: Sour Diesel (CO)

Harmony Extracts: Sour Kush Live Sauce (CO)

Avitas: Sativa (WA)

Oregrown: Cvndyland Sauce(OR)

Elevate + Create

With these pods, expect a mild, concentrated high that promotes focus and feelings of alertness. Try any of these next time your afternoon is a maze of deadlines and tasks in need of completion. These are ideal for Monday morning wake and bakes. I'm generally skeptical of any cannabis product marketed as inspiring creativity or something that's going to make me, like, want to go on a hike. (This is weed, people, not Adderall.) But these pods, all of which originate from balanced, hybrid strains, should definitely deliver a significant creativity boost.

Jetty Extracts: Girl Scout Cookies (CA)

Harmony Extracts: Lemon G Live Sauce (CO)

Oregrown: Fire OG Sauce (OR)

Eden Extracts: Diablo OG (CA)

Calm Down + Chill Out

The non-intoxicating cannabinoid CBD is really having its day in the sun. That’s because over the last few years, we’ve learned more about how beneficial the compound truly is in treating anxiety, pain, and inflammation. On top of that, CBD is legal in all fifty states, and when combined with small amounts of THC, the real “magic” of cannabis becomes apparent without taking users for a trip through space and time. Whether you are high (on life or other drugs) and are seeking a softer landing, or you simply want to loosen up a little bit, check out these Era pods, all of which contain CBD-rich extract blends.

Mary's Medicinals: Mary's PAX Era Pod (CO)

Avitas: Avitonic (WA)

Oregrown: Pineapple Jager 2:1 (OR)

Tune Out + Turn Off

High in THC and sourced from indica-dominant strains, the following pods are best enjoyed after sundown as they’re great for sleep, pain, and sore joints. Or perhaps you’re wound tight and need a little help turning off your brain for the evening. These should help with that. Expect a heavier body high that extends from your head to your toes.

Bloom Farms: Blue Cheese PAX Pod (CA)

The Lab: Bubba Kush PAX Pod (CO)

Island: Blackberry OG (CA)

The Lab: Ghost OG (CO)

Whichever you choose, remember it's never a bad idea to start with a few puffs and wait ten minutes before puffing more. Even though the highs we get from vapes often feel instantaneous, they can take a few minutes to fully develop like your favorite mini Polaroids. Go easy, friends, and you can't go wrong.
